Probably singles, unless otherwise stated. The conceit this year was obviously rather different as it celebrated the best songs of the year, whether singles, B-sides, EP or LP or compilation tracks. This allowed opportunities for a number of acts to have multiple entries: techno genuis Ant Wilson dominated, clocking up no less than 14, many of which were in the higher echelons. (Six were solo: his collaborators on the others were Chris Liberator - twice - DDR, K.N., Mark Verso, Rackitt, Nick Grater and Lenny Dee).

While Ant's entries were all from 12"s, a number of albums dominated too. Flyblown had 6 tracks from one record, "Genocide-Genocide", an LP which we were happy even then to acknowledge as the album of 2005 (even though there was, alas, no list to "prove" it). Hood's "Outside Closer" and the single from it, "The Negatives" gave us 5 entries in total (album track "The Lost You" having already appeared in the 2004 singles list); Napalm Death's "The Code Is Red... Long LIve The Code" gave us 4; and Half Man Half Biscuit's marvellous "Achtung Bono", Bolt-Thrower's return to form "Those Most Loyal" and Lovejoy's sparkling "Everybody Hates... Lovejoy" gave us 3 each. It's fair to assume that those records would have dominated any 2005 album chart.

Things were still not markedly international. Only Brazil's Pale Sunday made the top ten from outside the UK, followed by Math and Physics Club (US), Cee-Rock (US), the Lucksmiths (Australia), the Happy Couple (Germany), the Go-Betweens (Australia), Public Enemy (US) and Obituary (US). Of the guest artists, Smiley da Ghetto Child, Milano and Lenny Dee represented the US: Nick Grater, South Africa; and K.N. got Japan into the list. A lot of male vocals again, the only exceptions coming courtesy of No Lay, Helen Love, Rachel Stevens (!), Tender Trap, Comet Gain, Lady Sovereign, Kicker and the Happy Couple.

Finally, Lethal Bizzle deserves a mention, with no less than four, economically-titled, entries: the undervalued singles "No" and "Uh-Oh", the "Backwards" re-working of '04's "Forward", and of course the subtle album track "Fuck You!"
